How to build simple Bamboo Kobos for Sightseers
New Accommodation Project:
Cliffside Bamboo Huts
Our farm is pleased to announce the construction of new accommodation units: A-Frame Bamboo huts, also known as “kobo”. These private retreats are designed to offer guests a unique experience along the cliffside.
Each hut will feature a single room measuring 3 x 3 meters, furnished with a bamboo queen-size bed. A separate sitting area and a balcony will provide panoramic views of the valley and surrounding mountains.
For guest convenience, each hut will be equipped with electricity and running water. Electrical outlets will be available for charging devices. Additionally, a basic “dirty kitchen” will be provided outdoors, along with a rainwater-fueled soaking bath.
These huts are designed to provide a private and serene getaway. Further details on booking and availability will be released upon completion.
Innovative Construction: Welding Meets Bamboo
A novel construction technique is emerging, merging the traditional art of welding with the natural strength of bamboo. This approach involves the strategic use of 10 mm rods to secure the edges and corners of bamboo structures. They will also be used to pin the Ridge Joist and the Collar Joist together. There will be no nails or screws in load carrying bamboo. These rods are pinned into the bamboo, then welded at the top and bottom, creating a robust and stable framework. They can wiggle but will not loosen. They will even stay solid when the bamboo volume increases or decreases due to weather changes.
The inherent hollow nature of bamboo presents a unique challenge when compared to solid wood construction. However, the combination of welding and bamboo techniques offers a promising avenue for innovative and sustainable building practices. This method allows for the creation of strong and eco-friendly structures, which will be looking quite robust and natural.
The lower portion of bamboo will be stained with varnish or old motor oil to prevent rotting and termites.
The Basic Layouts
The Basic Layouts offer a straightforward retreat experience. Each unit features a single bedroom and a spacious, open-concept patio that is covered. 3×4 or 3×3 sqm BR with one power outlet, plus a 2×4 or 3×2 sqm patio. Amenities include a soaking bathtub and a small, outdoor kitchen. These layouts are designed to facilitate relaxation, with a focus on simplicity and ease of access to the cliffside location. All of them will be elevated to prevent snakes or other creatures to enter the private space. An add on later will be a bamboo fence for enhanced privacy.

Details for Welding the Corners
All corners and also all wall assemblies will be pinned and welded with 10 mm to prevent wind and sheer forces from moving elements. Here is how we do it. The pins will go through all the elements and will be welded at the bottom and top, then triangled to enhance stiffness and strength. Thus, we do it with the walls, and the roof.
